HUNTINGTON, WV - The Marshall University men's soccer team will welcome the Memphis Tigers to Sam Hood Field on Saturday night for a 7:00 p.m. showdown between two Conference USA contenders. The game will be the first conference game at home for Herd this season, as they come into the match with a 4-4 overall record and a 1-0 C-USA standing.

Memphis enters the game with a 5-2-1 record and is putting together one of its best seasons in recent memory behind the stellar offensive performances of junior Mark Sherrod - 6 goals - and Liam Collins - 4 assists. The Tigers began the season 5-0-1, but have dropped both of their last two matches, with the latest being a heartbreaking, 3-2 loss to C-USA foe South Carolina.

Marshall on the other hand, has found new life in the boots of Tom Jackson and Anthony Virgara. After starting the season 0-4 and scoring zero goals in that period, the team has sparked to life with Jackson grabbing a hattrick in the last home match against Winthrop, and Virgara scoring both of the Herd's goals in the 2-1, overtime victory over C-USA opponent Florida International University.

Now back to .500 for the season, Marshall will be hoping to improve to a perfect 2-0 conference mark and 5-4 overall record with a victory over the Tigers at Sam Hood Field this Saturday night. When these two teams met last season, the Herd defeated Memphis 2-1 in overtime behind Tom Jackson and Matt Risher goals.

The game against the Tigers will be the first match in a very important week of C-USA play for Marshall, as it will have to prepare for a Wednesday, October 5, trip to Kentucky and a Saturday, October 8, hosting of SMU following this Saturday's showdown. Fans of all ages are encouraged to come out and support the Thundering Herd as it kicks off 2011 C-USA action at Sam Hood Field.
