Marshall Topples Memphis in 3 Goal Thriller
In typical fashion, junior forward Tom Jackson once again stole the offensive spotlight, scoring his second consecutive hattrick at Sam Hood Field this season. The New Zealand native capitalized off of two Michael Hayes’ assists and a free kick from goalkeeper Daniel Withrow to down fellow Conference USA competitor Memphis 3-0, and move to a perfect 2-0 C-USA record on the year.
Goalkeeper Daniel Withrow also had a strong night, recording five saves and the game-winning, first assist to Jackson’s opening goal in the 32nd minute. Hayes also put in a stellar performance, playing Jackson through on two occasions, the first of which allowed Jackson to practically pass the ball into an open net for a 2-0 lead.
In a game that was played in rainy, cold, conditions, Marshall managed to come away from a scrappy match with a crucial victory that will now have it sitting atop the C-USA regular season table for at least the next three days. The Herd will have a chance to further distance itself atop the league if it can defeat Kentucky on the road this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
“This was a great win against a Memphis team that is really on the rise in the conference,” said Head Coach Bob Gray. “I thought this was one of our best all-around performances, and now we can look forward to a big game against Kentucky on Wednesday.”
