Special to HNN Provided by Herd Zone

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University sophomore Jordan Dixon (Edmond, Okla.) has been named as the National Pitcher of the Week and Conference USA Player of the Week by sports website College Sports Madness, the site announced Tuesday.

Dixon was also named the co-pitcher of the week for Conference USA on Monday, becoming the first Thundering Herd player to receive the honor since Andi Williamson in 2013.

Dixon provided commanding performances for the Herd in the Charleston Challenge, going 5-0 in Marshall’s first five games.

Dixon also finished the weekend with a 0.31 ERA in 28 and 2/3 innings, with 42 strikeouts. In her first appearance of the season, Dixon moved into ninth place in Marshall history for total strikeouts, passing Caitlyn Jackson’s 247.

In the Herd’s game against UMass-Lowell, Dixon threw 11 consecutive strikeouts in relief and 13 total, one shy of her career high set last season.

She also only allowed one earned run and 13 hits in three starts and five total appearances.

Herd coach Shonda Stanton said that Dixon’s performance was one to be remembered and that her endurance in the circle was an impressive feat.

“We have talked to the team about competing to be remembered - her performance this week sure is memorable,” Stanton said. “Again, the numbers are incredibly impressive and to see how fresh and in control she still was on Sunday is what really was exciting.”

Marshall will next play in the Pirate Snow Invitational in Greenville, N.C., this weekend, with four games Friday through Sunday.
