'Anything Goes' to Cast its Anchor in Huntington, WV

HUNTINGTON, WV- The first-class musical comedy that is "Anything Goes" is coming to the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center on Monday, February 23 @ 7:30 pm. Winner of three Tony Awards, "Anything Goes" is tabbed as one of the greatest musicals in theater history. Created by Cole Porter, this musical comedy is Broadway’s revival of the classic production.

"Anything Goes" sails under the direction of Sean McKnight and Jennifer Savelli. McKnight and Savelli will recreate the original direction and choreography by Kathleen Marshall. Based on the Roundabout Theatre Company production, The New York Times calls it “a zesty new revival with knockout numbers and white-hot dancing” while the AP exclaims that it’s, “so delightful, so delicious, so de-lovely!”

"Anything Goes" features notable music composed by Porter, including “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “Friendship,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Blow, Gabriel, Blow” and of course “Anything Goes.”

This musical comedy, based on the 1934 classic, is a story set aboard the ocean liner S. S. American, where nightclub singer/evangelist Reno Sweeney is en route from New York to England. Her pal Billy Crocker has stowed away to be near his love, Hope Harcourt, but the problem is Hope is engaged to the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Joining this love triangle on board the luxury liner are Public Enemy #13, Moonface Martin and his sidekick-in-crime Erma. With the help of some elaborate disguises, tap-dancing sailors and good old-fashioned blackmail, Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart.

"Anything Goes" is a shining example of classic musical theater, complete with amazing tap numbers, campy jokes, unlikely happy endings and eminently hummable songs. This musical is fast-paced, farcical, and kid-friendly.

Based on the original book by Wodehouse, Bolton, Lindsay & Crouse and new book by Crouse and Weidman, Anything Goes stays true to its origin. And helping to preserve this storyline are leading actress Emma Stratton as Reno Sweeney and leading actor Brian Krinsky as Billy Crocker. The principal cast also includes Tracy Bidleman as Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt, Anthony Chan as John, and Rachelle Rose Clark as Hope Harcourt. The creative team includes music direction by Robbie Cowan with additional orchestrations by Bill Elliot, original scenic design by Derek McLane coordinated by James Kronzer, and original costumes by Martin Pakledinaz.

The Columbus Dispatch says about this Broadway musical: “Anything Goes is easy to like. With terrific Cole Porter songs and nifty period dancing to bring out its romance and comedy, this classic 1934 musical offers reliably escapist entertainment. Strong singing and nifty choreography buoy the national tour of the most recent Broadway revival…”

As for the title name of the musical, “Anything Goes,” showbiz legend has it that during chaotic out-of-town rehearsals leading man, William Gaxton, was asked if he would object to making an early entrance and replied, “In this kind of a spot, anything goes!” And so it does. If the show could be said to be about anything, it’s about improvising and vamping your way out of a tight corner.
