Three Herd Seniors to be Honored on Saturday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – After clinching a spot in the Conference USA Tournament on Thursday, Marshall men’s basketball (10-18, 6-9) will look to keep its momentum when it hosts Florida Atlantic (8-18, 1-14) on Saturday at Cam Henderson Center. Seniors Shawn Smith (Sacramento, Calif.),Cheikh Sane (Dakar, Senegal) and JP Kambola (Toronto, Ontario) will be honored before tipoff at 7 p.m.

Marshall earned a Conference USA Tournament berth with an 87-69 triumph over FIU on Thursday night. Sophomore Austin Loop (South Webster, Ohio) led the Herd with 20 points while going 9-of-9 from the free throw line, and Justin Edmonds (Albion, Mich.) was just one point off his career high with 19.

-          Be the Herd’s seventh in the last 10 games

-          Give Marshall its most wins in C-USA play (seven) since the team went 9-7 in 2011-12

-          Give the Herd its most regular-season wins (11) since it went 13-19 in 2012-13

According to the Marshall record book, sophomore Austin Loop (South Webster, Ohio) is on the cusp of a few Herd milestones. He has made 75 threes this season, which ranks No. 9 all-time for a Marshall player, and his 198 attempts from long range ranks No. 7. Additionally, his season free-throw percentage (.905, 57-of-63) leads Conference USA and ranks No. 3 all-time for the Herd. Loop’s 2.7 treys per game is also a league high.

The Herd completed the 12-team field for the 2015 C-USA Basketball Championships with its win over FIU (Feb. 26). Tickets are available for purchase online at C-USA member school athletic box offices or by calling UAB directly at 205-975-8221. Eleven men’s games are included in the men’s all-session ticket package, with prices starting as low as $100 for all four days. Excellent lower bowl seating is still available at $180, while a premium seating package is offered at $250. Ticket holders for the men’s games will have access for the women’s championship games at no extra charge.

Saturday’s game will be a Kelly Green-Out, where fans are encouraged to wear their favorite Kelly Green outfit. The Herd will give away limited edition Kelly Green bags to the first 1,000 fans in attendance.

Florida Atlantic (8-18, 1-14) has dropped 14 of its last 15 games, including 10 straight, since it defeated the Herd for its only win in C-USA play on Jan. 17 (76-62). The Owls average 62.9 points per outing, led by three with double-figure scoring averages: Marquan Botley (13.6), Solomon Poole (12.6) and Jackson Trapp (10.6). FAU hasn’t won on the road since a 68-50 defeat of Jacksonville on Dec. 30.

FAU leads the series with Marshall, 2-1. Last time versus the Owls (Jan. 17), Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis) was one point off his career high with 24 points in a 76-62 loss in Boca Raton, Fla. Florida Atlantic leads the series in Huntington, 1-0, after a 65-57 win last season (Feb. 1, 2014).

The Herd will make its final regular-season road trip when it visits Old Dominion (March 5) and Charlotte (March 7).
