Women's Soccer Battles to 0-0 Tie
Although neither team walked away from the game with a goal, both played exquisite defense. Lindsey Kerns posted six saves, however, none was more important than the save she made at the 2:30-minute mark in the second period when the Knights had a two-on-one ten yards from the net. After an exceptional pass by the UCF player, Kerns made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless. The junior keeper nabbed another sensational Knight attempt in the second overtime that gave The Herd continued life in the extended game.
Marshall delivered numerous attacks on offense, as Angela DeSumma led the team with four shots, followed by Katie Ball who fired two. Lizzy Lemons, Freya Holdaway, and Megan Tabler each contributed a shot as well.
Head Coach Kevin Long was enthused by his team’s potential after tonight’s showcase. “We just shut out one of the best teams in the country. That’s something to claim and build off of moving forward. Credit UCF and their defense against our attacks, but the good things is we put pressure on them and held the Knights defensively.”
Long continued, “We’ve got to keep playing this way to stick out in the conference. Our aggressive play and lock down defense are a must moving forward. Conference USA teams are only getting tougher, and we want to prove that our team deserves consideration. Right now we are foaming at the mouth to play Sunday because we want to feed off of tonight’s play.”
The Herd welcomes Southern Miss to Huntington Sunday, where the two will face each other for a 1 p.m. matinee at Sam Hood Field. Live stats can be followed here, along with radio broadcast here.
