Irving, Texas – Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Kerns was selected as Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Week for her exceptional play over the weekend. Lindsey posted two shutouts in both games over the weekend against No.24 UCF and Southern Miss. While opposing the Knights, Kerns slammed the door on six shots, including diving stops with two minutes to play in regulation and within a minute to play of the final overtime period. Furthermore, her tactical defense forced several missed opportunities by Central Florida.

Kerns continued to showcase her prowess in the net by keeping the Golden Eagles from scoring on Sunday. The goalkeeper denied six Southern Miss shots, and held the opponents to a total of 12 shots. Her defensive blank against the Golden Eagles helped Marshall nab its first Conference USA victory Sunday.

Thus far Lindsey Kerns is 1-1-2 since earning her first start of the season, including a last-minute loss to No. 6 Memphis and a tie to No. 24 UCF. In her four starts, Kerns has accumulated 33 saves and a save percentage of .943. The keeper has also tallied two shutouts.

Head Coach Kevin Long noted, “Kern’s achievement is a testament to our team’s commitment to defending the goal and keeping opposing offensive attacks at a minimum. Lindsey has fought hard in practice to win the spot the last two weeks and her hard work has paid off throughout the games. I trust that this will only continue to help our team accrue the momentum they need to attain the goals we have set for our team.

The Thundering Herd and Kerns look to continue their success next weekend as they head to Southern Methodist and Tulsa. Marshall looks to finish the final five games of the season on a winning streak and make its second consecutive C-USA tournament.
