TAKE ONE WEEKEND FIRST Movie Comings/Goings Jan 28-Feb 3

Huntington, Charleston, Beckley, Logan & Wheeling.....

HUNTINGTON, WV (HNN) – Since the Oscar nomination arrived, you can anticipate more theatres will be scheduling “The King’s Speech” on the schedule. The flick has 12 nominations. It’s followed by True Grit (10); Social Network (8); Inception (8); The Fighter (7); 127 Hours (6); Black Swan (5); Winter’s Bone (4) ; Harry Potter (2); and Tron Legacy (1). Rabbit Hole (1), Country Strong (1) , Unstoppable (1) and Blue Valentine (1) all with one each.

The nominations will breathe a new “gotta see them” life into the flicks which mounted nominations such as  True Grit,  Black Swan, King’s Speech, and The Fighter.  Two of the multi-nomination films, Winter’s Bone (4) and 127 Hours (6) have not played in the region. “Winter’s Bone” will be the closing night feature of the Appalachian Film Festival in late February at the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center.

Starring Jason Statham , Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland, The Mechanic appears to be at least a partial remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson film which featured Jan-Michael Vincent. The stories are similar: An aging elite hitman befriends a young man who wants to be a professional assassin.

The publicity photos bring memories of “The Exorcist,” but the title here is “The Rite.” A disillusioned American seminary student attends exorcism school at the Vatican and encounters demonic forces. Colin O’Donoghue and Anthony Hopkins star. Michael (“1408”) Hafstrom directs.

Grab your Rocky costumes from the corset, err, closet, as Downhome Decadence teams with Huntington’s Cinema Theatre for interactive showings of “Shock Treatment” (Friday Jan 28) and “Rocky Horror Picture Show” (Saturday, Jan. 29). “Shock Treatment” is the prequel to RHPS and is a rarity on the big screen. Even more rare, a FULL shadow cast.

It’s the second week for the  newest Cinema Exclusive, “All Good Things,” takes inspiration from a notorious missing person’s case which weaves a love story and murder mystery set against the backdrop of a 1980’s real estate dynasty.

Philip Martin of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette calls it a “movie suspended between bold novelistic invention and journalistic reserve. Be it a demerit or credit Andrew (“Capturing the Friedmans;” “Catfish”) Jarecki is no Truman Capote and All Good Things is no In Cold Blood. On the other hand Kimberly Gadette, Indie Movies Online, praises superb acting and calls the production worth viewing. However, she labels it an “odd straddle between fact and fiction” in which the filmmakers miss the chance to bring more fictive power to the tale.

Ryan Gosling, Kristen Dunst, Frank Langella , and Lily Rabe star.
