EL PASO, TEXAS – A two-out, three RBI double by Katalin Lucas helped to take Marshall softball (33-12) past UTEP Sunday in a series win that finished 7-4.

Marshall qualified for the Conference USA Tournament in Miami with the win.

UTEP started things off with a sacrifice fly from senior Ashley Eldridge to make the score 1-0 Miners.

In the third, Marshall would answer with three runs. After freshman Elicia D’Orazio singled, junior Shaelynn Braxton moved her over to third with a double. Junior Katalin Lucas delivered the first run, after dropping a single into left field that brought D’Orazio across. The very next batter, freshman Taylor McCord, successfully brought home two runs with a ripped double to left center, which scored Braxton and Lucas.

UTEP would add another run in the bottom of the third, but Marshall pitcher Jordan Dixon was able to navigate Marshall out of a bases loaded jam with a two out strikeout.

The Miners added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Marshall responded with four of its own in the top of the sixth. Things started when sophomore Morgan zerkle scored after an error by the third baseman. Lucas then hit a three RBI double that was just fair on the right field line, scoring Braxton, D’Orazio and Greene to make the score 7-4 Marshall. The score would remain there after the game was not completed before the travel enforced “drop dead” time of 4:30 p.m. ET.
