HUNTINGTON – The City of Huntington is seeking community funding that will be used to help develop a comprehensive revitalization plan.

The revitalization plan is part of Huntington’s effort to win the American’s Best Communities competition, a $10 million initiative to stimulate economic revitalization in small towns and cities. The competition is sponsored by Frontier Communications, DISH, CoBank and The Weather Channel.

Huntington was named one of 50 quarterfinalist communities in the competition in April. As a result, Huntington received $35,000 from the competition as well as $15,000 from G.E. Fleet Leasing, the city’s corporate sponsor, to develop comprehensive strategies to accelerate the revival of its local economy and improve the quality of life. Huntington also must raise $15,000 from the community by Aug. 4. The city has raised $11,000 thus far.

“Our strength in Huntington is the increased involvement by members of our community in all of our initiatives,” Mayor Steve Williams said. “We are America’s best community because of their passion to set a standard that others across the nation will emulate.”

The city’s revitalization plan will focus on the Highlawn brownfield revitalization project; the West End River to Rail initiative; the Hal Greer Boulevard and Fairfield West revitalization project; and tying the bricks-and-mortar projects together with the deployment of high-speed broadband.

Huntington will have until Nov. 6 to complete its revitalization plan and compete for up to an additional $3 million to bring its economic development ideas to life.
