WSOC: Marshall Nabs First 2015 Win over VCU, 1-0

RICHMOND, Va. – A goal by freshman forward Ashley Seltzer (Knoxville, Tenn.) was enough to give Marshall women’s soccer its first win of the 2015 season, defeating VCU 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at SportsBackers Stadium.

The Herd improved to 1-1-0 on the year and earned its first win in the series against the Rams (1-2-1). VCU fell to 1-1-0.

In the 19th minute, Seltzer found the net for the first time in a Herd uniform, giving Marshall its first goal and lead of the season. Senior Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) sent a long pass across the box to Seltzer, who jumped and headed the ball into the right side of the net. Despite a disadvantage on the shot chart, down 11-8, the Herd kept a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Marshall out-shot the Rams 7-4 in the second half and ultimately held VCU off the scoreboard. The teams tied at 15 shots apiece, but the Herd took more shots on goal (9-4). Marshall also led in corner kicks, 8-5.

Senior Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) made three saves in 90 minutes and recorded the 13th shutout of her career, ranking second in program history behind Liz Orton’s 17 from 2006-09. Classmate Kelly Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Herd with five shots on the day. She is now tied with Amanda McMahon for third place in the Marshall record book with 152 career shots.

LONG STORY SHORT
Quotes by Coach Kevin Long:

On the first win of 2015:
“It’s great to get the first win of 2015 against a quality opponent like VCU. It was a pretty exciting day. I thought we played a much more well-rounded game than we did on Friday [against Monmouth]. We played well defensively, with the shutout, and also attacked well. In all facets of the game we looked much stronger. Our players stepped up and brought the intensity; it was a really good team win.”
