GREENVILLE, N.C.- The ladies of the Thundering Herd women's soccer team will travel to Greenville, N.C., on Thursday for a Conference USA showdown with the East Carolina Pirates in what will be Marshall's last match of the 2011 season.

The Herd had been hoping to squeeze into the C-USA Tournament with a win in this game, but even then would have still needed help from other results around the league. Unfortunately, those results haven't fallen Marshall's way, and the squad will now look to ride the leadership of seniors Katie Ball, Angela DeSumma, Freya Holdaway, and Megan Tabler for the last time into what will be the final game of 2011.

The team is fresh-off a clutch, 1-0 win over the visiting Rice Owls last Sunday in a contest that saw DeSumma score the game's only point. She continues to lead the team in goals this season, with five, and is followed most closely by fellow senior Freya Holdaway's two strikes. Desumma will also be looking to turn provider in this match, as one more assist will give her sole possession of first place in the Marshall record books for career assists.

DeSumma and company will need to be firing on all cylinders this Thursday if they are hoping to overcome an East Carolina team that is 4-5-0 in the conference and 9-6-1 overall. Sitting upon a 2-6-2 conference record, a win cannot catapult Marshall above the Pirates in the league standings, but can help the team stay ahead of Southern Miss and UAB. A victory on Thursday would also move the Herd above Houston, provided the Cougars lose to Rice, but since just eight of the twelve teams qualify, Marshall would be left one point and one spot shy of a postseason berth.

The Herd is 1-4-1 in its all-time series with ECU, but did defeat the Pirates 1-0 in double overtime last season when Megan Tabler notched the game's lone goal.
