Sam Hood Field to Host Final Game

HUNTINGTON, WV - Sam Hood Field has been the home of Marshall soccer for fifteen years, and has seen the Herd acquire a 76-35-9 record on its surface. Saturday night, the team will have one more chance to add a mark to the field's win column, when it hosts Conference USA foe Tulsa at 7:00 p.m.

Last season, Marshall and the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa played to a 1-1 draw in Oklahoma. This year, Marshall has already clinched a berth in the C-USA postseason tournament, and will be looking to move up from the No. 5 seed with a win over last place Tulsa.

The C-USA bottom-feeders are enduring a rough season, having picked up just one league win and a 5-10 overall record. For Marshall, the match will give the team a chance to reverse its fortunes after a two game skid that has seen the team drop its last two conference matches to South Carolina and UAB respectively.

Tom Jackson still leads the Herd in goals - with nine - while goalkeeper Daniel Withrow is second in C-USA with 64 saves. Both star players will be hoping to show up for the field's final match, and to help usher the team's three seniors - Carl Munday, Jordan Hilgefort, and Kyle Sniatecki - out of the door with a victory in their final home game.

Indeed, for the team's three seniors, Saturday's match will be a "last" for different reasons, as the trio and Sam Hood Field will simultaneously conclude their dedicated service to the Marshall cause. Munday, Hilgefort, and Sniatecki have combined for 29 wins, 13 goals, 15 shutouts, and 6 assists in their tenure, and will enter the game hoping to add to all four of those statistical categories.

Marshall is 7-6-1 on the year, and 3-2-1 in the conference, and will be looking to avoid a return to .500 with a win that will guarantee the team a winning, 2011 regular season record with one game remaining against UCF.  Tulsa will essentially be playing for pride, but will want to avoid a last place finish by upsetting the Herd - who it owns a 6-1-1 all-time record over - in the 7:00 p.m. conference showdown. Senior midfielder Corey Albertson leads the Golden Hurricane with five goals this season.
