SAN ANTONIO – Marshall women’s soccer extended its unbeaten streak to 11 matches at the foot of senior Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio), whose golden goal lifted the Herd to a 2-1 overtime victory over UTSA on Friday night at Park West Athletics Complex.

The Herd improved to 9-1-2, 2-0-1, remaining unbeaten in Conference USA play. Marshall has not lost since its 1-0 season opener at Monmouth on Aug. 21. UTSA fell to 1-9-1, 1-2-0 in the league.

Marshall’s streak of 576 minutes without allowing a goal was snapped by the Roadrunners in the 38th minute when Sam Batley took a ball in the six-yard box and put it past Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.). It was Kish’s first goal allowed since Sept. 11. The teams went into the locker rooms for halftime with UTSA on top, 1-0.

The Herd had some ground to pick up in the second half, and did just that in the 59th minute when senior Brittany Entz (Glen Allen, Va.) gathered a cross from Sydney Arnold (Stafford, Va.) at close range to the keeper and struck to the right corner of the net. It was her first goal since a game-winner against Middle Tennessee on Oct. 20, 2013. The match remained knotted at 1-1 as the whistle blew on regulation.

Five minutes into overtime, Simmons collected a deflection and struck from 30 yards out, beating the keeper to her left for the 2-1 win. She now has 13 points on five goals and three assists. It was her first game-winner since a 2-1 victory over Appalachian State on Sept. 7, 2014.

For a statistical summary, the Herd handily outshot the Roadrunners, 19-6. Each team took two corner kicks. UTSA keeper Katherine Tesno made seven saves while Kish had two.

OVERTIME? NO PROBLEM
The Herd is unbeaten (4-0-8) in extra time since the start of the 2013 season. Marshall’s last overtime loss was Oct. 25, 2012, when it dropped a 1-0 decision in the 94th minute to ECU in the season finale.

LONG STORY SHORT
Quotes by Coach Kevin Long:

On the Herd’s performance against UTSA:
“UTSA is a team that won’t stay at one win very long. They competed hard and contested every ball and that was hard for us to get adjusted to. It frustrated us early on. I give a lot of credit to UTSA. For us, we had two great performances tonight; two really great goals from Erin [Simmons] and Brittany [Entz]. It’s great to see Brittany out there; she’s coming along very nicely for us and we want to see her out on the field. She had some good minutes tonight and had great product for us. When she scored, at that point we kind of increased our effort and put pressure on them. And Erin’s ball was so well struck, from about 25 yards or so out. She did a great job finding space and put it past the keeper’s hands. This is a great start to our road trip considering we played lackluster in the first half. It was great to see us pick it up in the second half. It wasn’t the prettiest performance, but it’s nice to get the result.”
