HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men’s soccer team advanced to the Conference USA Championship game after a 1-0 win against No. 17 South Carolina at Transamerica Field in Charlotte on Friday.

The Herd improves to 8-8-2 this season and is now unbeaten in its last six matches. Marshall last played a Conference USA Championship game in 2009, in a 3-0 loss to Tulsa.

The Herd will play No. 5 seed FIU on Sunday at 2 p.m. The match will be televised on Fox Sports Networks.

AGAINST THE GAMECOCKS

The first half was a scoreless affair, with South Carolina controlling much of the possession. Marshall was content to stay organized at defense and tried to work the ball forward on the counter. The Gamecocks outshot the Herd five to one in the first period.

South Carolina almost opened the second half with a goal, with a header by Kurtis Turner that hit the crossbar from a corner kick in the opening minute.

Marshall started to force its way into the match as the game progressed and was rewarded with the goal in the 67th minute. Junior Rimario Gordon (Kingston, Jamaica) scored his second goal of the tournament, receiving the ball off a punt, turning and firing past the Gamecocks keeper from 10 yards out.

From there, the Herd would go on to keep the lead and hold on for the win. Reining was forced into six saves, as the Gamecocks took 24 shots. Marshall took just nine shots, with five on frame.
