MBB: Kelly’s 3-Pointer Lifts Herd over Monarchs, 78-75

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior forward James Kelly (Ann Arbor, Mich.) sunk a 3-pointer with four seconds remaining in regulation to lift Marshall men’s basketball (10-10, 6-1) to a 78-75 road win at Old Dominion (10-10, 3-3) on Saturday afternoon at Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Kelly paced the Thundering Herd with his Conference USA-leading 10th double-double of the season, producing 21 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis) followed Kelly with 19 points, alongside Stevie Browning (Logan, W.Va.) with 15 and Jon Elmore (Charleston, W.Va.) with 13. Elmore had seven assists for the Herd. For the Monarchs, Trey Freeman had a career-high 37 points, with 20 coming in the first half.

“I thought our guys did a great job of preparing themselves,” coach Dan D’Antoni said. “This is a tough place to come. Jeff [Jones] does a super job. It’s a great venue. I love this arena. But I was proud of our guys. They hung in there tough. I know they’ve been fighting to get that victory here.”

The first four minutes saw three ties and four lead changes until a 7-0 run put the Monarchs into a five-point lead, up 15-10 at 14:55. Marshall stormed back with an 8-2 run to re-gain the lead, 18-17, at 12:33. Over the next four minutes, the score tied twice more until C.J. Burks (Martinsburg, W.Va.) was fouled on a layup and made the resulting free throw to give the Herd a 27-24 advantage at 7:58. A quick 5-0 run by the Monarchs put them back in front, 29-27, at 7:10. After four more ties, Marshall earned its first lead since 7:42 after a 3-pointer by Taylor made it 39-38 with 1:29 before the break. Freeman made a layup to put ODU ahead 40-39 at halftime.

Old Dominion reached a largest lead of seven (54-47) at the 14:17 mark in the second half, however, the Herd responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game for the 11th time (54-54) at 12:52. Over the next four minutes, the score remained close with five more ties with two lead changes.

Marshall finally gained momentum with a 10-0 run over three minutes to reach its largest lead of eight points (73-65) with 4:32 remaining. A 10-2 run by the Monarchs evened the score for the 17th time, 75-75, with 31 seconds on the clock. Kelly grabbed an offensive rebound after a missed layup with nine seconds to go, and the Herd called timeout. As the game resumed on an inbounds play, Kelly took a pass from Elmore, shot a long 3-pointer, and drained it to give the Herd a 78-75 lead with four seconds left. Freeman tried a desperation three but it would not go, and Marshall claimed its first victory in Norfolk.

It was the Herd’s first win of the season when trailing at halftime. Marshall had the edge in field goal percentage (50.9 percent to 45.3 percent), points in the paint (47-34), and fast break points (17-8). ODU outrebounded the Herd, 34-32, and had a 14-12 advantage in second chance points.
