Herd to face Houston and Southern Miss this week

HOUSTON – The Thundering Herd men’s basketball team will take to the road for a pair of Conference USA games this week, beginning Tuesday at Houston in a game that will be nationally televised by CBS College Sports.

Marshall improved to 14-7 and 2-4 in league play with an impressive 85-70 win over Memphis on Saturday in Huntington.  The Herd led by as many as 20 points while Memphis never led by more than a point.  DeAndre Kane led the way with 20 points while Tirrell Baines and Damier Pitts scored 17 apiece.

With the Herd up by 17 points in the second half, the Tigers cut into the lead, trailing by 5 in the final minutes, but aggressive play by the Herd resulted in and-ones on four straight trips down the floor as Marshall stretched the lead to as many as 20 points in the last minute of play before taking the 15-point win.

The Cougars, who are led by first-year head coach James Dickey, enter Tuesdays tilt with an 11-9 overall mark and a 3-4 record in C-USA play.  Houston has struggled as of late, dropping its last three games, including an overtime loss to Rice last Wednesday and a 74-70 loss on Saturday at East Carolina.  The Cougars have been solid at home, posting a 9-2 mark at Hofheinz Pavilion.  Marshall has struggled in trips to the arena, going 0-3 and falling by an average of 15.3 points per game.

Adam Brown leads the Cougars with 14.9 PPG while Maurice McNeil averages 12.5 PPG and a team-high 8.2 rebounds per contest.  In Saturday’s loss against the Pirates, McNeil posted an 18-point, 13-rebound performance.

Marshall and Houston will tip off at 9 p.m. ET.  Steve Lappas and Roger Twibell will have the call on CBS College Sports.  The trip continues on Saturday as the Herd will have a rematch against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg.  Marshall grabbed a 95-65 win over the Golden Eagles in their January meeting in Huntington.
