HUNTINGTON, WV Less than 48 hours of a season-opening win over Alabama State, the Marshall men’s basketball team will play Jacksonville State at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Cam Henderson Center.

Both teams are coming off season-opening wins on Friday. The Thundering Herd (1-0) defeated Alabama State 67-49, while the Gamecocks (1-0) beat Miles College 87-64.

Marshall dominated the post in its victory with 40 points in the paint compared to just 14 for ASU. Both of Marshall’s highly touted junior college transfers Robert Goff and Dennis Tinnon started and excelled in their first NCAA Division I game. Tinnon, who led the NJCAA in rebounding last season at Kansas City Community College, recorded 14 rebounds and scored 10 points for a double-double. Goff (Hutchinson CC) tied a game-high with 13 points and added seven rebounds in his debut for the Herd.  DeAndre Kane, a member of the Preseason All-Conference USA First Team, scored 13 points to go with five assists.

Like the Herd, the Gamecocks also dominated the post in their first game with a 42-10 advantage in the paint. Four players scored in double figures led by junior guard Mason Leggett’s 17. JSU shot 55 percent from the field and connected on 30-of-40 free throw attempts.

The Gamecocks return just four letterwinners off of last season’s team that went 5-25 overall and finished 10th in the Ohio Valley Conference. Senior forward Stephen Hall is their top returner as he averaged 11.1 points and 5.0 rebounds last season. Eleven newcomers makeup the 2011-12 team including seven transfers. The matchup with the Herd begins a stretch where JSU will play 15 of their next 20 games on the road.

Marshall leads the all-time series 2-0. This will be the first meeting since 1996 when the teams played a home-and-home series. The last meeting resulted in a 111-90 win for the Herd at the Cam Henderson Center.
