FLASHBACK CINEMA: Indiana Jones; Top Gun on Big Screen

A cruise on the cinematic time machine goes to 1989, when Stephen Spielberg put Sean Connery as Harrison Ford's co-star for "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."

The third installment of the Indiana Jones story sees Dr. Jones  (Ford) in search of his father who disappeared while searching for the Holy Grail. Instead of a 'prequel' (i.e. "Temple of Doom") , "Last Crusade" again embraces the series kiddie matinee and chapter play (serials) origins.

Mystical artifacts remain the quest coupled with Indy's fear of snakes and impossible odds.

One critic has dubbed it "the best" with effective use of comedy and action/adventure.

People Magazine barely managed a discouraging word: "Take a good look at this movie. In fact, go back four or five times and take four or five good looks. In this imperfect world, you're not likely to see many man made objects come this close to perfection."

"Last Crusade" returns to Marquee Cinemas big screens Wednesday, Aug. 10 for 2 & 7 p.m. showings.

Tom Cruise will be next in the retro series, as "Top Gun" plays Sunday , Aug. 14 & Wednesday Aug 17 @ 2 & 7 p.m.  Cruise plays a devil may care pilot; Kelly McGillis is his romantic interest. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

Famed critic Gene Siskel wrote: "The aerial sequences in Top Gun are as thrilling -- while remaining coherent -- as any ever put on film."
