Student art exhibitions to open at Marshall galleries

New and seasoned students at Marshall University’s School of Art and Design will showcase work at the school’s galleries this month and next.

Graduating seniors will present individual bodies of work from their last year as part of their capstones during “Student Capstone Exhibitions” at the Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery at Marshall’s Visual Arts Center. “Foundations Review: Selected Student Works,” in the Birke Art Gallery on campus will feature faculty-selected works from students in the beginning stages of the art program.

The two-part capstone exhibitions are broken into two groups of seniors, and each artist will present his or her work during opening receptions beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, and Monday, Nov. 28. The receptions are free and open to the public.

“Graphic design, art education, ceramics, photography and painting will be reflected, as presenting students are graduating with these emphases,” said Melissa Yungbluth, gallery director at Marshall. “The scope of these exhibitions is a great example of the teachings of the School of Art & Design.”

The first group’s works will remain on display in the Visual Arts Center Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Nov. 17, and the second will be up until Dec. 1. Group one includes Ashleigh Adkins, Brianna Jarvis, Cory McAtee and Karl Shaver. Group two includes George Cook, Joel DeAlba, Chad Floyd, John Hicks, Moriah Lockhart and Lara Peavler.

“Foundations Review: Selected Student Works,” will be on display at the Birke Art Gallery on Marshall’s Huntington campus beginning with an opening reception at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The reception is free and open to the public.

“Guests will see an incredible range of media and ideas: drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video and more,” said Yungbluth.

The work can be viewed until Friday, Dec. 9, at the Birke, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday from noon to 4 p.m.

Admission to both the Carroll Gallery and the Birke Art Gallery is free. For more information about these exhibitions or the art program at Marshall, visit, call 304-696-2296 or e-mail
