Marshall to Compete in Aces Winter Classic

HUNTINGTON, WV Marshall women’s basketball team travels to Evansville, Ind. this weekend to compete in the Aces Winter Classic. The tournament showcases three other teams including Evansville, Eastern Kentucky, and Chicago State.


The Herd’s first game will be against Chicago State on Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET. Depending on the outcome of the contest, as well as the outcome of the Purple Aces and Colonels game, Marshall will either play Eastern Kentucky at 2:00 p.m. ET or Evansville at 4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.


Marshall enters the weekend with a 3-2 record, following their most recent victory over Nebraska-Omaha this past Sunday. Shynisha Johnson led the team in points during the game for the fourth time this season after finishing the game with 14. The junior guard currently leads Conference USA with a 53.8 three-point percentage and 2.8 made three-pointers per game. Leandra King recorded her first double-double of the season, totaling 13 points and 11 rebounds. The junior center earned nine points from the free throw line and recorded a block and two steals during the contest. Marshall’s other two wins of the season come against Morehead State and Kent State. The Herd marks a 2-1 record at home and a 1-1 record on the road.


Scouting Chicago State: Chicago State enters the tournament looking for its first win as the Cougars are 0-7 to open up the season. Their most recent loss was a 66-39 defeat against Hampton on Monday. Senior Janay Dockery leads the Cougars in total points with 89 and averages 12.7 points per game. She also marks 15 steals as well and leads the team in rebounds with 34. Freshman forward Paris Williams adds 69 points for the season, averaging 9.9 points a game in her debut season. She also leads the team in steals with 20. Natalie Marlowe combines for 23 assists on the year and boasts a 84.6 percent average from the free throw line.


Scouting Evansville: Tournament host, Evansville, comes into the weekend 1-5. Their lone win was a 59-49 victory over Troy this past Saturday. Most recently, the Purple Aces lost to Ball State on Tuesday, 55-50. Evansville is led by junior center Samantha Heck, who records 66 points for the year and has a team-high 11.0 points per game. Senior forward Briyana Blair adds 53 total points, averaging 8.8 per game Blair leads the team in rebounds with 49 (8.2 per game) and six blocks. She also marks a team-leading 20 assists. As a team, the Purple Aces have out-rebounded their opponents 233-224 and average 38.8 rebounds per game.


Scouting Eastern Kentucky: The Colonels enter the weekend 2-4 after most recently grabbing their second victory of the season against Kentucky Christian, 97-61, this Tuesday. Eastern Kentucky’s other win was a 71-60 victory over Western Michigan on Nov. 20. The Colonels are led by sophomore guard Marie Carpenter, who records 70 total points and 11.7 points per game. Junior guard Raechele Gray follows with 60 points for the season, 10.0 points per game and eight blocks. She also marks a team-high 20 assists for the year and a 86.7 percent average from the free throw line. She is a threat from behind the arc, totaling 11 three-pointers for the season. Down low, the Colonels are led by Jade Barber, who has 48 rebounds and 8.0 rebounds per game.
