Marshall Hosts High Point Saturday at 7 p.m.

HUNTINGTON, WV Saturday starts a busy stretch for the Marshall men’s basketball team as it hosts High Point at 7 p.m., the first of three games over a span of five days.


The Thundering Herd wraps up pre-Christmas play hosting Belmont on Monday and West Virginia Tech on Wednesday.


Marshall enters Saturday’s game with a record of 6-2 after an impressive 82-63 win on Sunday over Iona which at the time was the highest scoring team in the NCAA. Senior guard Damier Pitts hit four three-pointers and led the way with 25 points. Pitts has scored in double-figures in each of his last seven games and is averaging 14.5 points this season. Sophomore guard DeAndre Kane leads the Herd in scoring with 15.4 points per game after scoring 19 against the Gaels.


Junior Dennis Tinnon ranks second in Conference USA and 17th in the country in rebounds per game with 10.5. Nearly half of his rebounds have come off of Marshall missed shots as his 4.8 offensive rebounds per game are tied for the second best mark in the nation.


As a team, Marshall ranks 10th in the nation in rebounds per game (41.9) and third in offensive rebounds per game (17.0). The Thundering Herd has yet to be outrebounded this season and ranks fourth in the nation in rebounding margin (+11.5) according to the latest statistical rankings.


A member of the Big South Conference, High Point enters Saturday with a record of 3-6. The Panthers return eight letterwinners from last season’s team that went 12-19 overall and 7-11 in the Big South. HPU is led by preseason all-conference team member Nick Barbour. The senior guard is averaging 18.0 points per game and is the reigning Big South Player of the Week after averaging 24 points in HPU’s win over Averett and loss to Wake Forest. Against the Demon Deacons, he scored a season-high 35 points, 24 in the second half and is currently fifth on HPU’s all-time scoring list (1,650 points).


The Panthers are coming off an 89-53 win over Averett on Saturday and also have wins over Bridgewater College and The Citadel. In its third game of the season, HPU lost at C-USA foe UCF 84-72.


This is the fifth ever meeting between Marshall and High Point. The Herd leads the all-time series 4-0 winning the last meeting 109-76 on Dec. 20, 2009 in Huntington.
