First Lady Visiting Huntington for Opioid Roundtable; OD's down 28% First Half 2019

First Lady Melania Trump is visiting Huntington for an opioid roundtable in conjunction with the Cabell Huntington Health Department.  She previously toured Lily's Place.Sen. Capito, Sen. Manchin, Police Chief Hank Dial, and Fire Chief Jan Radar are among participants.

During the roundtable it was announced that 2019 OD's are down 28%, which continues a downward trend.

Mayor Steve Williams explained that though the first response team comes from federal funding, he stressed reaching out to all sources for future grants.

"We're not going to stop when the grant runs out," Williams explained, regarding tapping multiple sources.

Gov. Jim Justice said this little community of WV just may have  workable OD solutions "figured out. Let us run the play" by telling the President during a quiet time.

One of the most startling revelations came from the how some schools participate compassionately in the Handle with Care program, where law enforcement notified school officials of family incidents. In the example, a dad was overnight arrested for beating his wife. Dad went to jail; mom to the hospital.  Johnny asked his sister to help with his homework but she slit her wrists.  Instead of facing a punishment for not doing homework and acting up in class, Handle with Care proactively lets school officials know so they can show compassion and caring.
