DEVOTION: The Rules of Love

by Beth Bondurant

Too many of you are using legal rights as a cover for selfishness and whim, pretending to be righteous just because you are 'legal'. Please, no more pretending. You can't use legal cover to mask a moral failure.

We'll say it with cards ... we'll give hugs and kisses... candy and flowers... dinners and dancing... we'll follow the rules and fly balloons and make calls and plan surprises.

On the outside... we will be the picture of love and caring... of goodness and generosity... of hope and kindness... of patience and faithfulness... of joy and gentleness...  people will see how much we love one another.

But the truth of it is... following the rules doesn't always come from the heart.

Love bears all things ... believes all things....  hopes all things... endures all things... Love never ends.

O God... I am so quick to mask my inner selfishness with outward sacrifice.  I give and pour out to others but deep within lies anger and resentment that negates goodness. It is only Your Love that is unconditional and everlasting. Help us to be reborn... renewed... and filled with Your love so what we do and what we say brings hope and healing... mercy and grace. Help me to know how to follow You and not be tied to traditional regulations that seem just... but may actually keep your love and presence from permeating every aspect of my life.

I need guidance.  I need spiritual eyes to see.  I need the kind of love that is able to bear all things... believe all things... hope all things and endure ALL THINGS. In my relationship to You and to others... to my family and my friends, I truly want God's heart to enable me to LOVE...to BE LOVED... to transform The Rules of LOVE.
