Top Rebounding Teams Collide in Houston

HUNTINGTON, WVTwo of the top rebounding teams in the country will face off in Houston as the Marshall men’s basketball team faces Rice Saturday at 8 p.m. ET at Tudor Fieldhouse.


Through Thursday, Marshall (10-4, 1-0 C-USA) was tied for third in the NCAA with 42.6 rebounds per game while Rice (9-6, 0-0 C-USA) was 16th at 40.2. They are also the top two rebounding teams in Conference USA.


Rice boasts the nation’s leading rebounder in junior Arsalan Kazemi. The preseason C-USA First Team member is averaging 13.9 points and 12.4 rebounds per game and has registered a double-double in his last eight games.


Marshall’s Dennis Tinnon is also averaging a double-double with 10.3 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. He has seven double-doubles on the season and also ranks fourth in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game.


The Thundering Herd is coming off a 76-60 win over UTEP on Wednesday and is looking for its first 2-0 start to conference play since the 2009-10 season. Marshall has been impressive on the offensive glass as it leads the nation with 17.6 offensive rebounds per game.


In the win over the Miners, the Herd received tremendous bench production, outscoring the UTEP counterpart 29-8.


Rice has dropped its last two games including a 78-74 loss at TCU on Wednesday. At home, the Owls boast a 7-2 record.


Marshall leads the all-time series 5-2 and has never lost at Tudor Fieldhouse with a record of 2-0. In last season’s meeting, Johnny Thomas led four Marshall players with 13 points in a 72-61 win over Rice in Huntington.
