Walt Disney returns one of the classic romantic 'fairy tale' love stories to theatres this weekend. "Beauty and the Beast," which softly and musically re-tells the allegory about a lovely young woman falling for an physically unattractive "beast" with a heart of gold has been adapted to 3D. The beautiful music in this animated classic offers inspiration and hope to not only the lovelorn but as a means of explaining that you must look both inside and out when determining the value of an individual.

"Beauty" will be the first of three 3D adaptations. "Star Wars Phantom Menace" follows in February . In April, the classic "Titanic" returns in 3D.

The Academy Award winning song, "Beauty and the Beast," (in the You Tube clip, copyright by Walt Disney Co.), is performed in the movie by Angela Lansbury, then, there is a reprise over the closing credits sung by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson. Composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman, it was one of Ashman's last songs prior to his death from AIDS in 1991.

"Beauty and the Beast" will be joined this weekend by "Contraband" and "Joyful Noise" in mainstream releases.

While "Devil Inside" wanted the Satanic creature exorcised, one of this weekends films concerns a choir glorifying God. "Joyful Noise" returns country ballad queen , Dolly Parton , to the ‘big’ screen, where she is accompanied by co-stars Queen Latifah    The film has similarities  to Whoopi’s “Sister Act” or the more fantasy driven, “Preacher’s Wife.”  The two divas play small town choir leaders hoping to win a national competition . First, they must come together concerning their different methods of manifesting their faith to achieve a nearly impossible dream.

"Contraband" having roots in the foreign remake genre which brought “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” to prominence. Mark Wahlberg plays a man who long ago abandoned his life of crime. However, his brother-in-;aw botches a drug deal in Panama, forcing Wahlberg to step back into the worlds of smuggling high stakes and organized crime in an attempt to rescue him. It’s been compared to the “Ocean 11” series, as well as “Blow Out” and “The Net.”

Some cities in WV may be graced with the opening of "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," or "The Iron Lady" or (later) "The Artist."  The three have received multiple award nominations and are anticipated to be in contention for multiple Academy Award nominations , including Best Picture.

Next weekend brings the nationwide release of "Extraordinarily Loud, Incredibly Close." Having received sterling reviews, the production did not amass Golden Globe or other award nominations, possibly due to its late release and unavailability for pre-screenings to voters. Based on an acclaimed book, the story follows a young gifted autistic boy with a key. Left by his father (Tom Hanks) who died at the World Trade Center, the youngster believes that he must find the door that will be opened, even though his chances are minimal. Sandra Bullock stars as the young boy's mother.

Films concerning the terror attacks have not been incredibly successful at the megaplex. Initially, they were thought to be a taboo . Some productions that were shot with the Twin Towers in view were re--edited to remove the collapsed high rises. Still, the hole in the skiyline of New York City was distinct and unavoidable. Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center" and "United 59" fared best of the mainstream films dealing with the attacks.

"Extraordinarily" , though, relates to surviving the losses of that day, so it has been buzzing with favorable tenderness and fragility.

The Golden Globe Awards will be presented Sunday. For nominations visit: http://www.imdb.com/oscars/nominations/golden-globes
