Marshall Challenges Southern Miss on Wednesday

HUNTINGTON, WV – Hot off of wins against Houston and Tulsa this past week, the Marshall women’s basketball team looks to continue their success against Southern Miss on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. ET.


Marshall (11-3, 2-0 C-USA) won their fourth game in a row after knocking off Conference USA competition Houston and Tulsa. The victories help the Herd claim their best start to a season since 1986-87, when Marshall started 12-3.This is also the first time Marshall has started with a 2-0 record in C-USA since 2007-08.


Lateidra Elliott was the leading scorer in the two opening Conference USA games for the Herd. The senior guard averaged 12.5 points per game in the two contests after earning 11 points in Houston and 14 against Tulsa. She showcased why she is the number one ranked three-point percentage shooter in C-USA, finishing the two games with a combined 4-for-6 (66.7 %) from behind the arc. Elliott leads the team with 15 made three-pointers and totals 7.3 points per game.


The Herd is led in points by Jasmine Shaw with 8.2 points per game. The sophomore guard combines for 106 total points this season, while shooting 47.6 percent from the field. Erica Woods has a conference-leading 80.0 percent average at the free throw line and also contributes a team-high 90 rebounds. Defensively, Victoria Wells leads with 35 steals, while Leandra King totals 22 blocks for the season.


Southern Miss (6-9, 0-2 C-USA) most recently took a 56-49 loss to Houston in Hattiesburg, Miss. Jamierra Faulkner paced Southern Miss with 13 points, 10 assists and a career-high seven steals. Tanecka Carey chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.


Carey leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 18.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, while Faulkner follows with 15.6 points per contest. Nitesha Pierce adds 7.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per outing. As a team, USM is shooting 41.4 percent from the field and 62.6 percent from the line while averaging 63.9 points and 39.3 rebounds per game.
