Marshall to Play at UAB Wednesday

HUNTINGTON, WV Marshall will have the opportunity for a 3-0 start in Conference USA for the first time since a 4-0 start to the 2009-10 season as the men’s basketball team takes on UAB at 8 p.m. ET in Birmingham, Ala.

 

The Thundering Herd (11-4, 2-0 C-USA) is coming of a 63-61 win at Rice on Wednesday to improve to 3-2 on the road this season.

 

Senior Shaquille Johnson has recorded season-high point totals in each of his last three games, including the game-winning layup against the Owls. DeAndre Kane leads the Herd in scoring with 15.6 points per game. Junior forward Dennis Tinnon is the team’s leading rebounder at 10.4 boards per game. His eight double-doubles this season is tied for the 17th most in the NCAA.

 

Rebounding continues to be a focal point for Marshall as it ranks third in the NCAA in rebounds per game (42.7) and is second in offensive rebounds per game (17.6).

 

The Herd has rebounded its last two opponents, Rice and UTEP, by a combined 37 boards. Marshall has yet to be outrebounded and is outrebounding opponents by 11.7 boards per game, the third best mark in the NCAA.

 

UAB is 5-9 on the season and 0-1 in C-USA after a 62-59 loss at home to Memphis on Wednesday. The Blazers are led by Preseason C-USA Player of the Year Cameron Moore. The 6-10 senior forward is averaging a double-double with 15.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. He also leads the conference with 3.2 blocks per game.

 

This will be the 15th meeting all-time between UAB and Marshall. The Blazers have won six of the last seven meetings including the previous two. UAB swept the series last season including a 64-48 win in Huntington.

 

The game will be broadcast throughout the Thundering Herd Radio Network. The game is not televised, but live video streaming and gametracker will be available at HerdZone.com.

 

Player of the Week: On Monday, Dennis Tinnon was named the College Sports Madness C-USA Player of the Week. The junior forward helped Marshall to a 2-0 start to conference play with two double-doubles on the week. He recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds against UTEP on Wednesday and 10 points and 11 rebounds against Rice on Saturday.
