Having the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will delay the specific theatre  weekend lineup confirmations. All the times and comings and goings will not likely be confirmed until late Wednesday. And with three to four new movies, be forewarned: Catch those that have "split schedules" or any that you have been putting off. Wait too long and you'll have to settle for a small screen presentation when the DVD window opens months from now.

For those waiting for ‘serious’ Oscar contending films, Marquee has The Descendants in the wings. After the Golden Globe ceremonies, The Artist and Descendants become ‘favorites’ for latching on to a Best Picture Academy Award. The Globe ‘drama’ winner often wins Best Picture.

Expanding this week, “Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close,” the 9/11 drama about a boy who’s dad perished when the towers fell. Young Tom Horn has been overshadowing both Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. The question --- will this touching one family drama break out of the till now so-so success of films about the terror attacks. Oliver Stone’s “World Trade Center” and “United 59” have fared best. Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit  9/11,” which questions the ‘official’ governmental and mainstream media explanations and “Man on a Wire” depicts   Philippe Petit's daring wire-walk across the gap between the twin’s on a wire.

Actually, an entire underground cult of World Trade Center terrorist conspiracy documentaries have been made and they can be found by searching  9/11 conspiracy documentary. “Loose Change” has received the most interest. Many seek to show the doomed WTC 1 & 2 and the nearby WTC 7, as victims of intentional “implosions.”

Several have the terror events incorporated do not focus on the attacks themselves, such as “Dear John,” where true love must await another tour of duty ,  “Reign Over Me,” in which Adam Sandler plays a widower, and “Remember Me” stars Robert Pattinson (do I have to tell you what he’s famous for?), Pierce Bronsan and Emilie de Ravin which revolves around  a mother’s murder in 1991 on a subway platform, then, flashes forward to this family’s dysfunction in 2001.

Films that have not caught hold at the box office are those concerning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They range from “The Hurt Locker” and “Green Zone,” to “The Kingdom,” “Stop Loss,” and “The Messenger.” Others fictionally link the Bush presidency and CIA through inference to domestic conspiracy, such as Robert Redford’s “Lions for Lambs” and the oil and terror connections of “Syrana.”

Mainstream movies such as Arnold  Schwarzenegger’s “Collateral Damage” had an L.A. terrorist bomb opening removed after a four month delay, “Bad Company,” which involved a bomb plot on Grand Central Station was delayed, the 2002 version of “The Time Machine” removed an NYC destruction scene,  and “View from the Top,” which concerns a flight attendant was delayed two years. Several fllmmakers  declined to remove the Twin’s, such as “Vanilla Sky,” “Gangs of New York” and “Artificial Intelligence.”
