TAKE TWO: WEEKEND FIRST Weekly Movie Comings & Goings

The nominees are....

While some specialty bookings may be impacted by Tuesday’s nominations, the mainstream releases for the weekend go forward. They are:

THE GREY: Director Joe (“Smokin’ Aces,” “The Narc,”) Carnahan directs this story of an oil team trying to survive in the brutal weather of Alaska following a plane crash. Liam Neeson, Demont Mulroney, Frank Grillo and Dallas Roberts are featured. I sure hope this adventure doesn’t inject a former cinematic taboo that often emerges in isolated ‘you’ or ‘me’ or ‘them’ odysseys.

ONE FOR THE MONEY: Katherine (“New Year’s Eve,” “The Wedding,” “Life as We Know It”)  Heigl stars in the film adaptation of writer Janet Evanovich’s possible franchise. Heigl plays newly divorced Stephanie Plum who after being fired from a department store lingerie department undertakes a job as her cousin’s bail-bonding business, where her first assignment (new weapon in tow) is dragging a former romantic back to justice. If this one earns back its investment, “Two for the Dough” will be next. Film was shot in Ambridge, Pennsylvania.

MAN ON A LEDGE: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks and Jamie Bell appear in this leaping man suicide spectacle. A police shrink tries to save the would be victim, but he’s merely diverting attention from a diamond heist. Think “Inside Man” follow up. But, true historians of the cinema will recall “Fourteen Hours,” where an unhappy man ponders jumping from a high rise. The 1951 Henry Hathaway directed drama featured Paul Douglas, Richard (“Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”) Basehart, and Barbara Bel Geddes. Basehart received a ‘best actor’ award from the National Board of Review, Hathaway a Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival, and the BAFTA nominated it as best film.

ON DECK: The Woman in Black (Daniel ‘Harry Potter’ Radcliffe); Chronicle; Innkeeper; Big (Drew Barrymore) Miracle;

LIMITED RELEASES: The Descendants; Iron Lady;

And, the Academy Award nominees include (to be announced after 8:30 a.m.)

The nominees for this weekend's Screen Actor's Guild ceremonies are:
