Huntington Firefighters Respond to Smoke at Twin Towers East
Evacuated students stated that a room had caught fire, but firefighters quickly suppressed what has been officially confirmed as a malfunctioning heating unit.According to a firefighter, no flames came from the unit. Apparently, the smoke set off the smoke detector. The Parthenon reported that the unit belonged to the university.
HFD had to clear smoke from the building before allowing students to return. Those living on all floors but the 12th were allowed back in by before 10:00 p.m.
As a precaution, HFD responded with multiple units. Ambulances stood by near the 7-11 Convenience Store in the event they were needed. A spokesperson for the HFD said that the response time was three minutes.
Firefighting crews had earlier battled a blaze at 10th Avenue and Eighth Street which caused significant damage to the second floor and attic of the structure across from the old Huntington High School.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
