Holbrook Attending Funeral of North Carolina SWAT Officer

HUNTINGTON, WV (HNN) – Police Chief Skip Holbrook returned to Charlotte, North Carolina for attend the wake of a former comrade, according to Brandi Jacobs-Jones, director of

administration and finance.  Fred Thornton, a SWAT officer and 28 year veteran of the Charlotte/Mecklenberg force was killed Friday in an accident at his home, according to officer.com.

Thornton had been on SWAT duty after which he returned home. He was checking his equipment  when a “distraction device” exploded.The device has been identified as a flash bang  grenade.

Although emergency surgery was performed, Thornton died from massive internal injuries.

Holbrook served with Thornton before he took the chief’s job in Huntington.

According to WSOC-TV, Thornton had spent 23 years in the city’s SWAT unit. He also served on the Carolinas Med-1 mobile hospital unit which responded to Mississippi and New Orleans in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina.
