Marshall to Face Hot Tulsa Squad Saturday

HUNTINGTON, WVMarshall’s men’s basketball team will face the hottest team in Conference USA when it plays at Tulsa Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.

The Thundering Herd (14-8, 5-3 C-USA) is coming off an impressive 63-44 win over Tulane on Wednesday which broke a four-game losing streak. Marshall used solid defense and rebounding to win as it outrebounded the Green Wave 45-22 and had 20 offensive boards.

Marshall leads the conference in rebounds per game (41.6) and three-point defense (29.7). Those numbers will be tested Saturday as Tulsa (13-9, 6-2 C-USA) has allowed the fewest rebounds (30.0) of any team in the conference and is shooting 38.8 percent from three-point range which ranks first in C-USA.

The Herd is led by sophomore guard DeAndre Kane’s 16.0 points per game and junior forward Dennis Tinnon’s 10.3 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Shaquille Johnson averaged 16.5 points over his last two games and has hit 6-of-8 three-point attempts. He’s currently Marshall’s fourth leading scorer at 8.0 points per contest.

One game after going against the reigning C-USA Freshman of the Week in Tulane’s Ricky Tarrant, Marshall will look to stop the conference player of the week Jordan Clarkson. The Tulsa sophomore is averaging 15.7 points and 2.8 assists per game.

The Golden Hurricane has won its last six games and is coming off a 66-60 win at SMU last Saturday.

Tulsa leads the all-time series 7-4, but two of the last three contests have been won by Marshall. Last season, Tirrell Baines scored 26 points as the Herd dominated throughout in a 79-61 win in Huntington. Tulsa has never lost to Marshall at home, holding a 5-0 advantage.
