DEVOTION: Stepping by Faith

by Beth Bondurant

When we lived in rural

WV... it wasn't uncommon to find swinging bridges across small creeks as a way of getting to and from one's house to the road.

To walk on a swinging must truly rely on faith with every step... as any movement causes instability and risk.

Our daily faith walk is evidence that unsteadiness and insecurity marks our day with mystery and precarious defiance. We fling out our hands to grab hold of something that secures us in heart, mind, body and spirit.

"The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It's our handle on what we can't see."

This day will hold many secrets for individuals and families.. for church and society... for nations and continents. Faith in God's love for all gives us the courage to keep walking.

The mystery of how God loves us... reaches us... comes to us... moves us in love... takes us back and forth in our understanding and compassion... is a wavering and sometimes perilous walk.

Life is not easy.  Stepping by faith can mean we face hazardous and precarious bridges that bring us to the brink of anxiety and fear.

"God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us.  There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life—fear of death, fear of judgment—is one not yet fully formed in love."

O God, I want to be brave. I want to walk in faith and believe that "nothing separates me from your love".  Thank you the mysterious way you show your love for me... day after day... even when I waver in my love for you and for others.  Help me place my hands in yours and give also to you the hands of the people I love so you can give them the help and strength they need today.  I go around in circles with unsteadiness and turmoil and forget that you are with me always and your love and peace ultimately prevails.  Help me to keep moving toward you and open my eyes and heart to experience your redeeming love as I tread by grace... stepping by faith.
