PARALLEL UNIVERSE: Where Are the Aid Flotillas to Syria?

By David M. Kinchen
Less than two years ago, the headlines screamed about the so-called aid flotillas to Gaza, initiated by Code Pink and other so-called "Progressive" groups -- including the notoriously anti-Israel American Friends Service Committee. The boats sailed from Cyprus and Turkey and were intercepted by the Israeli Navy, which had reason to believe that smuggled weapons aboard the boats would reach the Hamas-controlled enclave -- which is continuing to shoot rockets into Israel.

Never mind, pointed out Commentary magazine today (Feb. 8) that the standard of living in Gaza is higher than that of Turkey (link:http://www.commentarymagazine.com/2012/02/08/gaza-syria-flotilla/).

I searched for similar flotillas from Cyprus and Turkey to embattled Syria, where Muslims are slaughtering each other and probably the Christian remnant of the country (there are no Jews there). Not surprisingly, I couldn't find any mention of Code Pink or other leftist groups sailing to Syrian ports with aid for Syrians who are trying to overthrow a violently dictatorial regime. I DID find many posts blasting the hypocrisy of the Gaza flotilla types, from all over the world, including Australia, which has a strong relationship with Israel.

I did find a similar query from a Muslim source (Link: http://ghadry.com/2011/04/24/where-is-your-syrian-humanitarian-flotilla-erdogan/), with  Farid Ghadry asking the same question I am: "Where is your Syrian Humanitarian Flotilla Erdogan?"

In a blog dated April 24, 2011, Ghadry says:

"It is unconscionable to think that people are dropping like flies on Syrian streets, the injured are hiding in private homes to avoid capture or cold-blooded murder, the funeral processions are being shot at with many killed at a time they bereave the dead, the detained are tortured and many die and are buried in mass graves, yet the international community seems only willing to extend words of comfort. Where is your conscience people? It’s Easter Sunday for heaven’s sake. Then comes Erdogan who thinks Gaza is tragic with its people under siege and tyranny while Syrians, under his buddy Assad, enjoy comfort and freedom. Where is your humanitarian flotilla to Syria Erdogan?

Our injured, attacked by the snipers of your dear friend Assad, cannot go to hospitals for fear of being either killed on the spot or arrested to die under torture. Or does that not fit with your understanding of what a human tragedy is?Are Gazans better people than Syrians? Is Assad too dear a friend for you to bother? And where are the Hamas Palestinians who seem to forget everyone else’s tragedy except their own? Where are their voices? Never expect Syrians to come to your aid again. When elections come, we will make the MB in Syria pay for your silence. And where is King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia? What kind of leader is governing over Makah and Medina who is afraid of his own shadow?

Where are the young tiger Princes of al-Saud to overthrow everyone over 80 who clings to power like a sick patient clings to oxygen? Have you become too comfortable for your own good? Wake-up Bandar bin Sultan. This is your time.Where are all the Arab leaders and the Arab League? The cowards hosting dinners to celebrate their fat bank accounts while our people die in front of their eyes?"

Huntingtonnews.net contributor Michael D. Jones responded to my call for reasons why there's no Syria flotilla:

"Only in the warped ideological mindset of American liberals can Assad's Syrian massacre be tolerated while Israel's much milder attempts to deal with the Palestinians are worthy of disruptive handwringing, aid flotillas, and constant protest," he wrote.

"When will the mainstream press here and abroad see this anti-semitism for what it is?  If one was simply concerned with oppressed people everywhere, surely average Syrians would qualify for sympathy and support.  Yet, for some reason, they have to lump it while Israel is castigated for trying to protect its own citizens from those in its Palestinian minority who seek to do Israelis great harm."

HNN contributor Joseph J. Honick wrote:

"Hypocrisy does know its roots:  the so called liberal/progressive media that can find no villains in Holocaust deniers or Muftis who demand the killing of all Jews or the United Nations that figuratively twiddled its dysfunctional thumbs while thousands died in Syria.  But why any surprise? These same phonies did the same as atrocities were committed against Israel only to act swiftly when Israel retaliated in her defense. Hypocrisy stands indicted will not suffer the consequences."

In a YouTube video, Irish and Canadian flotilla spokespeople explain why there's no flotilla to a Syrian port:
