Herd Faces Defense-Oriented UAB on Sunday

HUNTINGTON, WV  – Marshall women’s basketball sets its sights for Birmingham, Ala. to play in a contest against the UAB Blazers on Sunday. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 3:00 p.m. ET.

 

The Herd (14-11, 5-7 C-USA) most recently knocked off Memphis at home in one of the greatest games the Cam Henderson Center has seen in the 2011-12 season. Marshall answered an 8-point halftime deficit with a 37-6 run in the second half to upset the Tigers 65-54.

 

Lateidra Elliott leads the Herd from the bench with 6.8 points per game and has made 21 three-pointers for a 37.5 percent average this season.

 

Sophomore forward Erica Woods follows with 6.5 points per contest and claims the most rebounds this season with 150 and a 6.3 rebounds per game mark.

 

UAB (18-6, 9-3 C-USA) boasts a 9-1 home record, with its only home loss coming against Memphis on January 22. The Blazers most recently knocked off SMU this past Thursday, 50-46. LaShaunda Pratt and Amber Jones had double-digit point performances to help UAB to the victory.

 

The Blazers have the No. 2 ranked defense in the NCAA after limiting opponents to just 48.2 points per game. UAB’ s defense steals the ball over 10 times per game and averages 5.1 blocks per contest. Their consistent full-court pressure forces teams to turn the ball over nearly 20 times per game.

 

Three UAB players average double-digit points for the season. Amber Jones leads with 13.7 points per contest and 68 assists, while Karisma Chapman follows with 13.3 points per game. Chapman leads the team in steals with 59 and is shooting nearly 40.0 percent from the field for the season.

 

LaShaunda Pratt marks 11.2 points per game for the Blazers and has made 49 three-pointers so far this season. On the boards, Meagan Brown leads the team with 6.2 rebounds per contest and also has a team-high 34 blocks.

 

This will be the second meeting between the two teams this season. UAB was able to defeat Marshall earlier this month in the Cam Henderson Center, 50-45.
