Marshall Hosts Houston Wednesday at 7 p.m.

HUNTINGTON, WVMarshall’s men’s basketball team will play three of its final four regular season games at home beginning with Houston at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

 

The Thundering Herd (16-10, 7-5 C-USA) is coming off consecutive wins for the first time since Jan. 14 after a 73-68 win at SMU on Saturday. Senior guard Damier Pitts scored 18 points in the second half and finished with a game-high 20 points to help win the game in which Marshall never trailed. Pitts has been on a hot streak as of late, averaging 21.5 points over the last four games. It has improved his season average to 14.3 points per game which ranks 11th in Conference USA. Pitts also ranks third with 4.6 assists per game.

 

Senior guard Shaquille Johnson has averaged 10.1 points in conference games and is nearing a career milestone. The Jacksonville, Fla. native is one game away from tying Darryl Merthie (126) for the most games played in a career at Marshall.

 

The Herd will go up against the reigning Conference USA Player of the Week in Jonathon Simmons. Houston’s junior guard is coming off a career-high 28 points in the Cougars’ surprising 73-71 win over Southern Miss on Saturday to snap a four-game losing streak. Simmons averages 15.3 points per game, the seventh-best in C-USA.

 

Junior Alandise Harris leads the team in rebounds with 6.4 per game. As a team, Houston (12-13, 4-8 C-USA) ranks second in C-USA with 5.2 blocks per game.

 

Houston leads the all-time series 5-3. The teams met twice last season, first in Houston and then in El Paso for the Conference USA Tournament. Marshall won both meetings including a 97-87 win in El Paso.

 

The Herd will have a chance on Wednesday to sweep the season series over the four conference schools located in Texas for the first time in its seven seasons as a member of C-USA. Marshall has already recorded wins over UTEP (76-60), Rice (63-61) and SMU (73-68).
