Herd Travels to Southern Miss on Thursday

HUNTINGTON, WV Marshall women’s basketball returns to the road this Thursday for a contest against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The Thundering Herd (15-11, 6-7 C-USA) is coming off a monumental week that displayed the upsets of two top-three teams in Conference USA, Memphis and UAB. Both games showcased tremendous second half comebacks as the Herd fought back from a 12-point deficit against Memphis and 13-point deficit against UAB.

After limiting UAB’s offense to just 12 points in the second half this past Sunday, Marshall will look to its defense to be a key contributor in the Southern Miss game.

The 37 points Marshall limited the Blazers to is the first time the Herd has forced an opponent to under 40 points since beating Tulsa, 51-37, on January 10, 2009. For the season, Marshall is making its opposition turn the ball over 19 times on average and records over 10 steals per game.

Southern Miss (10-16, 4-9 C-USA) has been successful recently, breaking an eight-game losing streak by winning the last four of five games. The Golden Eagles are 4-1 for the month of February and has knocked off top C-USA competition Memphis and Tulane in the span.

The Golden Eagles rely heavily on offensive production from their guards. Junior guard Tanecka Carey and sophomore point guard Jamierra Faulkner lead the team, averaging double-digit points for the season. Faulkner is putting up 16.6 points per game and leads the team with 76 steals and 176 assists. Carey is posting 15.7 points per game and is the team leader on the glass, averaging 6.2 points per game.
