Kane, Pitts Named All-Conference USA

HUNTINGTON, WVMarshall men’s basketball players DeAndre Kane and Damier Pitts were both named to the All-Conference USA teams announced by the conference office Monday.

Kane, a sophomore guard, was named to the second team while Pitts, a senior guard, was named to the third team.

“I think it’s terrific,” said Marshall head coach Tom Herrion. “It was nice for DeAndre to be recognized on the second team. There are a lot of really good players in this league and probably a lot of guys who didn’t make any of the teams that deserved to be on it. To have not just one, but two with Damier being on the third team, it shows the respect that other people have for them as players and hopefully for our program as well.”

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Kane averaged 15.8 points per game, the fourth-best mark in Conference USA. He also ranks sixth in steals (1.4) and ninth in assists (3.4). Kane has led Marshall in scoring 14 times this season and had a career-high 29 points against Belmont on Dec. 19.

Kane was named to the third team last season as well as being named Freshman of the Year. He joins former Herd players Hassan Whiteside and Tyler Wilkerson as the only other Marshall players that have been named to the second team as they did so in 2010.

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Pitts averaged 14.4 points per game, scoring in double-figures in all but four games.  He has scored at least 20 points on five occasions including a season-high 27 points at East Carolina. Pitts ranks fourth in the conference with 4.5 assists per game and is one of the best three-point shooters, ranking sixth with 2.0 three’s made per game.

It is Pitts’ first conference award since making the all-freshman team in 2009.

Conference USA will announce its all-freshman team, all-defensive team, newcomer of the year, freshman of the year, sixth man of the year and player of the year on Tuesday.
