Herd, Blazers Set to Open Conference Play Friday

HUNTINGTON, WV -- Conference USA action will start up for the Marshall baseball team on Friday as the Thundering Herd travels to Birmingham for a three-game slate with UAB.

 

Games will take place Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.

 

The weekend will feature C-USA action around the league as East Carolina will travel to UCF, Houston will travel to Southern Miss, and Rice will travel to Memphis.

 

Marshall is 9-13 all-time versus UAB, 4-8 under head coach Jeff Waggoner, and 7-8 as a member of C-USA.Over the past three years, each series has been decided in the final day of competition; UAB won two of those three.

 

Last year’s series was decided in 14 innings as UAB won the Sunday matchup 2-1, marking the third straight contest between the two programs decided by a single run.

 

This year’s weekend series at UAB will feature three of the conference strikeout leaders as Ben Bullard, Mike Mason, and Aaron Blair are all scheduled to make starts.Bullard has 40 Ks this season which ranks him second in C-USA, three off the conference lead.Mason and Blair have accumulated 32 and 27 strikeouts to place them fifth and eighth, respectively.

 

Other C-USA leaders for the Herd include Nathan Gomez, who ranks third in run production with 23 RBIs.Isaac Ballou’s nine stolen bases rank him second in the conference and just two off the league lead of 11.

 

UAB’s Ivan De Jesus leads the Blazers in hitting with a .310 average; the sophomore outfielder also ranks 10th in C-USA in hits (26).

 

Reliever Ryan Nance, who acts as the team’s closer, has racked up five saves this season and ranks third in Conference USA.
