DEVOTION: Watchful Waiting

by Beth Bondurant

Waiting isn't easy... especially in our lifestyle of constant communication and instant gratification.

We see it...we want it...we demand it.  We consider it our right and privilege to gain access to information and resources with the touch of a button.  The faster we approach our goal... the quicker we can move on to the next level.

Being human is a life long condition even though we have continually hoped to access God's ability and wisdom and move directly into a position of ultimate power and control.

During the Lenten season we are to take time to prepare and wait... listen and learn... pray and meditate...  hope and feel... exemplify and witness to God's enduring presence and love for all the world.

It is an awesome thought to know that we have been chosen as God's Beloved... to live out God's love in our lives.. day by day... one with another.. in watchful waiting.

The Master's disciples had their own idea of God's plan of action... and never could quite understand the meaning of sacrificial love... of pouring out grace and peace... of offering forgiveness and cleansing... of giving away all that we are and have.. of allowing others to reject our way and follow their own path of faithfulness.

The disciples missed the meaning of their Master bending down to wash their feet... wanting their support in fervent prayer and spending time with so many community outcasts.  They didn't have time for watchful waiting when there was so much to do to gain control of important issues in all of society.

"Keep your shirts on; keep the lights on! Be like house servants waiting for their master to come back from a honeymoon, awake and ready to open the door when the Master arrives and knocks. Lucky the servants whom the master finds on watch! He'll put on an apron, sit them at the table, and serve them a meal, sharing a wedding feast with them. It doesn't matter what time of the night the Master arrives; they're awake—and so blessed!"

O God... I am so impatient and discontent to watch and wait for the meaning of life in the day to day challenges and changes.  I am too quick to decide the outcome and purpose of the dawning light and move into action and activity before watching for the signs of healing and hope that may come slowly ... but surely appear. Help me wait with You... sit with you... allow you to wash me and fill me up with nourishing goodness and grace.  I forget how broken and needy I am in body, mind, soul and spirit.  Humble my heart to receive your unconditional love so it can pour out to others. I am so task oriented ... help me appreciate time for watchful waiting.
