Hard Hitting Miners Await Herd in El Paso

HUNTINGTON, WV – Marshall softball will be looking to rebound from losses to UAB last weekend when it makes its longest road trip of the season to battle with UTEP starting Saturday.

The Thundering Herd (17-14, 5-4 C-USA) and the Miners (12-21, 2-7 C-USA) will begin their series on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for a 4 p.m. ET start. The two will conclude the match-up with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Marshall fell all three times to UAB last weekend at home. Twice, the Blazers nipped the Herd by one run to claim the weekend series. Center fielder Taylor Thompson has been at the top of her game recently. Thompson hit safely in each contest versus UAB and in the last six games of action, has posted a .417 batting average. She continues to provide excellent defense in the outfield, as the native of Washington has not committed an error this season.

The Herd pitching staff, which includes Andi Williamson the conference leader in earned run average, wins, hits allowed, and a variety of other categories, will have to deal with one of the best hitting teams in conference. The UTEP offense has the second best batting average in C-USA with a mark of .321 and leads C-USA in slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, runs batted in, doubles, and home runs. The Miners connect for 1.33 home runs a game, which is the seventh best mark in the NCAA.

The Miner offense features a one-two punch in Camilla Carrera and Chelsea Troupe whom are the top two hitters in the conference. Carrera has already set a new Conference USA single-season record for home runs with 21.

Marshall claims the all-time series record, 11-7-1, with the Herd being the victor in two games last season before game three ended in a tie.

The UTEP series begins a stretch of seven straight road games for MU. A game with Chattanooga and a C-USA series at Southern Miss follow the weekend series with the Miners. 11 straight home games at Dot Hicks Field will come after the road stretch.

GameTracker will be available for each game over the weekend and can be accessed from HerdZone.com. Live video through Herd All-Access will also be available as will live in-game chats.
