Marshall Softball to Host Summer Camps in July

HUNTINGTON, WVMarshall softball has announced that it will be hosting four different types of camps for a variety of ages during the month of July at Dot Hicks Field.

Directed by the Thundering Herd’s all-time winningest coach, Shonda Stanton, along with assistant coaches Amanda Williams and Chelsey Barclay, plus current and former Marshall softball players, campers will receive guided instruction and have the chance to improve their skill set.

All camps are held on-campus at Marshall’s home for softball, Dot Hicks Field. Each camper also receives a t-shirt during the camp.

Interested persons can print off the camp brochure from and send in the registration form plus a $25 non-refundable deposit to the softball offices at P.O. Box 1360, Huntington, WV, 25715. Campers are strongly encouraged to submit their form and deposit by July 1 to ensure a spot.

Below is an overview of the camps offered by the Herd:


When: July 9, 16, and 23

Time: 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (each day)

Description:Compete in games and participate in clinics at “the Dot.” Pitchers can receive extra individual help, while team receives a hitting clinic, etc.  During competition, clinic staff will evaluate your team, be in your dug-out for coaching and give post-game talk. Position play during games guaranteed on a first come, first serve basis.

Ages: Open to any and all entrants in grades 9-12.

Cost: One session: $50, Two sessions: $75, Three sessions: $125

Discounts available to teams with 10 or more players


When:July 11, 18, and 25

Time:5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. (each day)

Description:Pitchers will be instructed on the following areas: Pitching fundamentals (Back to basics), pitching drills (improve accuracy & speed; improve arm speed, wrist snap & leg drive), and pitching mechanics (grips & release for all pitches.)

Ages:Open to any and all entrants.

Cost:Each session: $30; All three sessions: $75


When:July 17, 24, and 31

Time:5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. (each day)

Description:Hitters will be instructed on the following areas: Swing fundamentals (essential components for an efficient and explosive swing), drills, drills, & more drills (everyday drills, location drills, tracking drills, balance drills), and becoming a better hitter (common problems and how to make corrections; bat speed drills & power drills).

Ages:Open to any and all entrants.

Cost:Each session: $30; All three sessions: $75


When:July 17 and 18

Time:9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (each day)

Description:Learn the Herd hitting philosophy with a strong focus on proper hitting mechanics and the mental aspects of hitting. Bunting, slapping and baserunning will also be covered. Defensive instruction will cover all positions with heavy emphasis on fundamentals and drills. 

Campers will be grouped based on age and skill.

Lunch and a one hour swim session inside the Marshall Recreation Center are included.

Cost:July 17, defense: $75, July 18, offense: $75, both days: $125

The facility waiver for the Rec Center will also need to be completed prior to the start of camp.
