WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-W.Va.) Wednesday issued the following statement to recognize the two-year anniversary of the death of U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd:

“Though it has been two years since his passing, Senator Byrd’s influence continues to touch the lives of so many throughout West Virginia and the Nation.  That Master builder, the staunch defender of the Constitution and the Congressional power of the purse, I can still see him on the Senate Floor, arm raised and finger pointing toward the Heavens, urging the Members of Congress to take the long view, to muster the spine and the guts to make tough choices, to invest in our Nation for the sake of future generations.

“I can see him counseling that the ‘the worm will turn,’ that the Party in power today will one day be in the minority and that partisan feuding, though part and parcel of politics, is ultimately counterproductive to the Nation’s well-being and to the People’s trust in their government.

“The good Lord only made one Robert C. Byrd.  What a blessing that he dedicated his life to our great State and its people.”
