Rahall Statement on Independence Day

Updated 7 years ago From a Rep. Nick Rahall Release

BECKLEY, W.Va. – U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall (D-W.Va.) issued the following statement on the eve of Independence Day, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776:

“On this July 4th, as we labor to recover from the violent storm that brought widespread disruption and destruction into our midst, the thought of celebration seems remote and ill-timed.   Yet, it has served to remind us of our many blessings – our family, our friends, our communities, and all those unknown individuals, who are reaching out to help us during this, our time of need.

“After traveling to several counties in southern West Virginia these past few days, I am inspired by the thought that, in America, this Land of the Free, even though we may lack power, we are not powerless.

“Let us remain thankful for the Mountaineer spirit of giving, a mirror reflection of Christ’s teachings to serve “the least of these” in need, and remember that the true strength of our republic lies in the good nature of our citizenry.

“Let us be inspired by the courage of our Founding Fathers, whose own example illustrates this simple truth, that the best of America is most evident during our most trying times.”
