TAKE ONE WEEKEND FIRST MOVIE COMINGS & GOINGS AUG 24

As the last month of summer closes, four films debut this week in some areas.  That's just how it opened. Next week, another early opening (Wednesday) at  cinemas as flicks from every genre continue waiting in the wings to replace any title that under performs. Translation, go see anything that's now showing, including The  'Dark Knight Rises,' as any hold over can become a casualty due to the number of August / September releases.

MAINSTREAM: The Apparition, Hit & Run, Premium Rush;  (Aug. 24) ;

EXCLUSIVE: To Rome with Love (Park Place Stadium)

ON DECK: Lawless; Oogie Loves in Big Balloon Adventure;

The Late Whitney Houston talks about "Sparkle."

DARK KNIGHT RISES MINI REVIEW:

Do you think comparative scenarios from literature and films apparently have little connection for “normal” readers/viewers? The same applies for the plot of “Dark Knight Rises.” The Joker does not appear. Master villain “Bane” has an iron-jaw type device on his face. A cat burglar (Anne Hathaway) has an obsession to disappear from electronic and internet background histories. She redeems her self-serving jewelry stealing acrobatics for preservation of millions of lives.

Bane’s objective is to disrupt so-called peaceful Gotham City and place his "ordinary" people without silver spoon pedigrees in charge.

No cinema shoot outs. No explicit violence. No mass murder, although the scheme has Bane planning to blow up Gotham with a nuclear device.

Bane’s villainous clout , at first, stirs echoes of rich versus poor class wars, but his army has plans to capture the town’s police force and replace it with their own dictatorial enforcement. Pivoting just below the surface, director Christopher Nolan craftily hikes prudent social commentary ranging from the dangers of peaceful uses of nuclear power to Batman’s ironic statement to recruited hesitant ally,  Catwoman, advising her  not kill or use guns.

Trading non-stop action for empathetic caring, “DKR” begins eight years following “Dark Knight” in a city where crime is now virtually non-existent. Bruce Wayne/Batman has ‘retired’ and become severely depressed following the death of his lover. By not responsibly looking after his investments, Wayne learns that his stocks have eroded and he is broke.

Weaving a complex good versus evil odyssey, "DKR" reshapes superhero odysseys rewarding ordinary human skills and succinctly dissecting freedoms, values, choices and responsibilities.

TED: We know that Charlie Brown held on to his security blanket for decades. This "adult" fairy tale fantasy blends a little Pinocchio and Harvey to bring a stuffed teddy bear to life. The bear becomes a friend for a near friendless boy and an instant celebrity. After the 15 minutes of fame dies, the foul-mouthed stuffed animal complicates his owner's life when he grows up and falls in love with a woman. A must see, the Ted and Teddy fight is a classic.

TOTAL RECALL REVIEW

Mesmerizing imagery captivates “Total Recall,” but, alas , none of them are human. The re-make of the Arnold Schwarzenegger  implanted ‘fake’ memory science fiction fantasy excels at the lavish, detailed technological marvels of sky cities, hover cars, and holograms, but the characters are little more than living cartoons that run, shoot, and dodge projectiles.

The “Blade Runner” styled sets coupled by awesomely bright, blurry, dauntingly detailed skyscapes merit a standing ovation for the CGI and f/x contributors, but the story needed even a smidgen (five minutes?) of character depth prelude to augment the two sentence subtitles describing the two habitable locations on Planet Earth.

A tunnel through Earth’s core (the Fall) boring from The Colony (Australia?) to Great Britain converted me to introspective wonderment about its introduction. Call it thrill ride  curiosity but this ultimate plunge and weightless inducing transportation spurred my technological wonderment.

All those nice accolades plummet when absorbing the who, how and why of this world poisoned by chemical warfare.

Opening with Douglas Quaid (Collin Farrell) his wife Lori (Kate Beckinsale) , a paramedic, reacting to a new terrorist attack, the narrative skips other than a thread of what’s on the table.  A little bickering about a benign existence hardly fixates a dream to have a heroic successful memory instead of dour , assembly-line industrial repetition. Purchasing a pleasure experience at ReKall hardly appears within affordability of working class. His chemically induced resistance secret agent would have empathy if the stakes of battle were clearer before the blasting and fighting begin.

As for the what’s real and what’s Memorex tug of war, Farrell becomes Hauser, the secret agent, with his heart a thumbing for Melina (Jessica Biel) , a resistance fighter.

One positive from the superficial characterizations is the heightening of the identity swap for story twisting purposes.

Unlike the Arnold-version, the update pits the two women into active action heroine roles, where the viewer has to guess which one is standing by her man.

Obviously, this "Total Recall" lacks the one-liner repartee which Arnold perfected.

That leaves a special effects extravaganza crying out for stronger character development so we will care about the fate of those trying to avoid oblivion.
