Marshall Baseball Players in the Pros – Summer Update #6

HUNTINGTON, WV -- Pitchers Dan Straily and Arik Sikula brought home winning decisions to highlight the performances of a handful of former Thundering Herd players last week in professional baseball.

Despite delivering his lowest single-game strikeout total (four) and largest earned run total (three), Straily still turned in his eighth quality start since moving to Triple-A.  Straily improved to 5-2 in his eight starts and added to his pro baseball lead of 175 strikeouts. 

Sikula, who pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief over three appearances last week, took his first winning decision of the season in a victory over Eugene on Thursday.

Dan Straily – Starting Pitcher – Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics) Straily made one start and picked up another winning decision when he went six innings and allowed three runs against Reno.  It was the eighth quality start Straily has thrown in as many starts, and the right-hander improved to 5-2 in Triple-A.  Straily struck out four in the victory and now has 175 professional strikeouts this season, 22 more than second-placed Felix Hernandez (153) of the Seattle Mariners.

Straily’s Triple-A stats are: 5-2, 1.36 ERA, 53.0 IP, 8 appearances, 67 strikeouts

Straily’s cumulative minor league stats are: 8-6, 2.60 ERA, 138.1 IP, 22 appearances, 175 strikeouts


Joe Church – Relief Pitcher – Eugene Emeralds (Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres) Church threw 2.2 innings over three appearances last week, taking a losing decision in a loss on the road on Thursday.  Church’s season stats are: 3-2, 5.94 ERA, 16.2 IP, 15 appearances, 22 strikeouts


Mike Mason – Relief Pitcher – Grand Junction Rockies (Rookie Pioneer League – Colorado Rockies) Mason gave up three runs (two earned) on two hits in his only appearance of the week.  Mason’s season stats are: 1-0, 12.54 ERA, 9.1 IP, 8 appearances, 8 strikeouts


Jesse Fernandez – Relief Pitcher – Aberdeen IronBirds (Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) Fernandez allowed just two hits in two innings of work in one appearance last week.  Fernandez struck out two (including his first career K) and walked one in the effort.  Fernandez’s season stats are: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2.2 IP, 2 appearances, 2 strikeouts


Ian Kadish – Relief Pitcher – Lansing Lugnuts (Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays) Kadish was relocated to Lansing, Mich. last week where he now serves as a member of the Lansing Nuts, Toronto’s affiliate in the Midwest League.  After a comfortable start which saw him strike out two in a single inning of relief on Saturday, Kadish was rattled for three runs in a single inning on Sunday.

Kadish’s Lansing stats are: 0-0, 0 saves, 13.50 ERA, 2.0 IP, 2 appearance, 2 strikeouts

Kadish’s cumulative minor league stats are: 1-1, 5 saves, 2.55 ERA, 24.2 IP, 17 appearance, 38 strikeouts


Arik Sikula – Relief Pitcher – Vancouver Canadians (Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays) Sikula took a winning decision and one strikeout in three appearances (3.1 IP) last week.  In the single inning of work against Eugene on Thursday, Sikula issued a walk as his only blemish in the win.  Sikula’s season stats are: 1-1, 3.32 ERA, 21.2 IP, 15 appearances, 17 strikeouts


Victor Gomez – Catcher – Florence Freedom (Frontier League) Gomez went 3-for-15 (.200) with a run and three RBIs last week.  Gomez’s season stats are: .212 BA, 0 HR, 4 RBIs, 3 BB, 0 SB


Rhett Stafford – Catcher – Vermont Lake Monsters (Class A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics) Stafford moved to the AZL Athletics in Phoenix where he went 0-for-4 with an RBI in his first game with the new club.

Stafford’s AZL Athletics stats are: .000 BA, 0 HR, 1 RBIs, 0 BB, 0 SB

Stafford’s cumulative season stats are: .177 BA, 1 HR, 6 RBIs, 10 BB, 0 SB


Kevin Shackelford – Relief Pitcher – Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Class A affiliate of the MilwaukeeBrewers) Shackelford pitched two innings of relief in his only appearance of the week.  Shackelford struck out one and walked one while allowing no runs and no hits and picking up a save.  Shackelford’s season stats are: 2-4, 4.66 ERA, 48.1 IP, 20 appearances, 31 strikeouts


Greg Williams – Relief Pitcher – Hickory Crawdads (Class A affiliate of the Texas Rangers) **Currently on rehab assignment with the Rookie Arizona League Rangers** Williams appeared for the first time in over two weeks on his rehab assignment in Surprise, Ariz. and gave up a run on one hit in 0.2 innings.  Williams’ season stats are: 2-0, 3.95 ERA, 27.1 IP, 20 appearances, 23 strikeouts
