DEVOTION: Mother's Day Born Again

by Beth Bondurant

The birth of our second son was premature and his life hung by a thread for 3 days.  It was actually on Mother's Day many years ago when the Doctor came and said "your son will live".. an almost 'born again' message.

"Now that you've cleaned up your lives by following the truth, love one another as if your lives depended on it. Your new life is not like your old life. Your old birth came from mortal sperm; your new birth comes from God's living Word. Just think: a life conceived by God himself! That's why the prophet said, The old life is a grass life, its beauty as short-lived as wildflowers; Grass dries up, flowers droop, God's Word goes on and on forever.  This is the Word that conceived the new life in you."

Flooding rains come and cover the earth but somehow when the warmth of the sun dries up the land... hope replenishes ... and in time there is newness and productivity.

Tears stream down our faces and we don't think we can ever easily breathe again in peace and joy.  For a ray of light to break through the darkness of despair... one waits for faith to open a tiny comforting portal.

Mother's can testify to the continual cycles of life that take us up to the mountain top of jubilation ... and then quickly slip us down into the depths of turmoil and disorder.

Life is a continuous journey.  We leave behind yesterday and move into today.  Born again into God's light of love... yet covered in a film of sticky substance that requires continual cleansing of heart, mind, body and spirit.

Born again... day by day in strong arms of love ... forgiveness... gentleness.... kindness... faithfulness... gift us with enduring strength for the circle of life.

Today, we give thanks for the natural provisions designed by the Master Creator.  We cling to the promises and the plan that sometimes is dampened by our tears and wrinkled out of shape.  We remember the faithfulness and sacrifice of "mothering wisdom" in our lives.  We desire to console and inspirit one another.

O God, we are in constant need of "mothering".  Life is fragile and we no more regain our footing from one fall then another deep crevice claims our stability.  Touch us with soothing quiet.  Embrace us with fortifying assurance. Seal us with wisdom and guidance.  Energize our calling.  Bless us in peace. In Your love and grace we are continuously born again.
