Marshall Heads North for Kent State Friday, Akron Sunday

HUNTINGTON, WV -- In the final week leading up to conference action, the Marshall women’s soccer team will take to the road for matches against Kent State and Akron this weekend.

Friday will pit the Thundering Herd against the Golden Flashes beginning at 4 p.m. on Zoeller Field in Kent, Ohio.  Sunday’s matchup will see Marshall square off with the Akron Zips at 3 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium in Akron, Ohio.

KENT STATE (4-0-1)

Marshall (3-3) is 3-4 all-time against Kent State, falling in the first and last two meetings (98-99, 03-04) while winning three straight from 2000 to 2002.

The 2004 matchup saw Kent State defeat Marshall 2-0 in MU’s final season of Mid-American Conference affiliation.  In that contest, Marshall fell victim to an early penalty kick goal from the conference tournament’s eventual top seed.

Kent State (4-0-1) holds an undefeated record entering Friday’s match and recently posted decisive victories over Lamar (3-0) and UT-San Antonio (4-1).  Junior forward Jaclyn Dutton leads the Golden Flashes in scoring with six goals and two assists.  Her 14 points are more than any other two Kent State players combined.

Kent State’s defense has allowed three goals through five games and is yet to give up more than one goal in any single game.  Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Senn has 14 saves and one shutout in her first year with KSU.

AKRON (4-2)

Marshall trails Akron 1-3-1 in the all-time series.  After shutting out Akron 3-0 in the programs’ first encounter, Marshall has since fallen to the Zips three straight times.  The most recent meeting came in 2006 when Akron used a 53rd-minute goal to slip past the Herd 1-0.

This season, Akron has ridden two two-game winning streaks.  The Zips enter Sunday looking to win its third straight, having posted back-to-back blankings of Cleveland State (2-0) and Canisius (1-0).

Megan Waskowski, younger sister of the Herd’s Robin Waskowski, leads Akron’s offense with three goals and three assists.  The freshman has indeed made the most of her nine shots this season, putting six on frame with a match-winner coming against Cleveland State.

Marshall enters the weekend looking to put consecutive wins together for the first time this season.  Freshman Erin Simmons scored twice in the team’s most recent win, a 2-0 defeat at Morehead State last Friday.
