Wayne had the early lead against the first place Class AA Chapmanville Tigers. Many Wayne fans likely foresaw an upset in the making. Although Wayne led 6-5 at the end of the fourth inning, Chapmanville in the top of the fifth inning stopped the upset minded thinking by scoring eight runs taking a 13-6 lead. The large lead put a damper on the enthusiasm of the Wayne Pioneers.
Chapmanville will advance to play in a regional final game with Sissonville at Sissonville. Sissonville won over Poca 7-6 to advance.
Legendary baseball coach George Brumfield whom the baseball field is named after was sitting quietly near the Wayne dugout observing the game. Once recognized many people were coming up to talk with him.
